Aggie volleyball finishes season as one of Class 5A’s elite

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tuesday just was not the Aggies day at the Crossplex in Birmingham in the Elite 8.

Sylacauga clinched a spot in the state tournament last week with wins vs. Rehobeth and Demopolis at regionals in Montgomery, but knew tougher competition would be waiting in Birmingham.

Sylacauga needed to upset the North’s number 1 seed East Limestone (Athens) on Tuesday to advance to the Final 4. Coach Rebecca Paterson’s Aggies fought valiantly, but came up a little short. Sylacauga kept every set competitive, but a dominating performance at the net from East Limestone’s middle hitter Riley Carwile was too much for the Aggies to overcome. The Indians took the match in straight sets, 8-25, 17, 25, and 14-25.

“This team made me so proud,” said Paterson. “It never mattered all year what the score was in any match we were in. They played with so much heart and gave it all they had every time we took the floor. That makes me proud to be their coach.”
