Aggie tennis rolling as sectional tournament nears

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Sylacauga High School’s tennis teams continued their run toward sectionals with a clean sweep over section opponent Moody on senior day March 18.


Both teams celebrated 9-0 victories. The Aggies have 4 seniors on the team this year, with all four being in the top six. The seniors are Ashlyn Wykoff, Brooke Gordon, Janie Poe and Colby Williams. Ashlyn Wykoff plays number 4 singles and 3 doubles and has been a varsity player for 5 years. Brooke Gordon plays number 5 singles and 2 doubles and has been a varsity player for four years. Janie Poe plays number 6 singles and is working on her first year letter as a varsity player. Colby Williams plays number 2 singles and 1 doubles and has been a varsity player for 4 years. Each of these seniors are an important part of the team and have helped lead the Aggies this season. The Aggies honored their seniors with an individual banner showcasing an action shot from the season. The players had pictures with families in front of their banners and a wonderful catered dinner from Chick-fil-A.

The girls are 9-1 overall and undefeated in section. The boys are 4-5 overall with the only section loss to Leeds.
The other members of the top six for the girls are Olivia Reams, Ansley Walker, Eva Reams, and Hayden Hope, who plays #3 doubles for the Aggies. The boys top six members are Creedy Clardy, Zac Hope, Noah Clifton, Justin Douglas, and Jackson Armstrong. The Aggies have several JV players who will be ready to join the varsity teams in the next few seasons. The JV boys are Ethan Perkins, Jordan Moon, Jackson Fornwalt, Dai Nguyen, Andrew Owings, and Jayden Thornton. The JV girls are Rebekah Wykoff, Mary Grace Segars, Lilly Kate Lucas, Natelee Fennel, and Mary Kate Clifton.

SHS will host the Sectional Tournament on April 12 (boys) and April 13 (girls) with Coach Cindy Cleveland serving as Tournament Director. This will be the second time for Sylacauga to host the sectional tournament. The Aggies are hoping to place in the top two teams in order to advance to State in Mobile.
